Hola from Costa Rica!

For those of you who don't know . . . I'm currently living in Cartago, Costa Rica (4 weeks down, 2 to go), participating in an international volunteer program. I'll begin posting regularly again as soon as I return to the States on May 23rd. Stay tuned for reviews on Costa Rican cuisine, recipes, and lots of pictures. Pura Vida!

I've always loved to eat. But it wasn't until I was preparing to leave Hawaii for college in California that I began cooking.

My first attempt yielded a sludgy, grayish vegetarian split-pea soup that my family politely (but reluctantly) slurped down. Needless to say, my cooking skills have improved in the years since. And though I am far from becoming a pro in the kitchen, I have developed an obsessive passion for creating new dishes and recipes.

Please join me as I embark on my culinary adventures!

What is "Mama-ghetti?"

When I was growing up, one of my favorite meals was my mom's Japanese-style meat-and-mushroom sauce spaghetti. At home, we differentiated it from the American and Italian-style pastas we ate at restaurants by giving it an affectionate nickname: "Mama-ghetti."

Though I've since moved out of my parents' house (and across an ocean), I sometimes still cook up a pot of Mama-ghetti when I'm feeling homesick. And it was while simmering Mama-ghetti sauce on the stove one night that I came up with the idea for this blog.

Here I will chronicle my culinary adventures, misadventures and experiments, track my latest recipes, and tell you all about the food I eat--at restaurants around the world and right here at home.

So thanks, mom . . . for the delicious food and the inspiration. And to you, reader, I hope you'll join in the fun!
